Volleyball is played competitively on indoor courts although beach volleyball has become more popular in recent years. Play begins when a player on one of two opposing teams serves the ball by hitting it with a hand or arm from behind the back boundary line of the court. The ball must go over the net, and into the receiving team's court. The receiving team can not let the ball hit the ground within their court. They may touch the ball as many as three times before it must be returned back over the net and into the oppositions court. Typically, the first two touches are used to set up for an attempt to direct the ball back over the net in such a way that the serving team is unable to prevent it from being grounded in their court.
The rally continues until either a team grounds the ball on the opponent's court and winning the rally or a team commits a fault and loses the rally. The team that wins the rally is awarded a point, and serves the ball to start the next rally. Faults include causing the ball to touch the ground outside the opponents' court, not getting the ball to pass over the net, catching and throwing the ball, hitting the ball with two consecutive contacts by the same player or four consecutive contacts by the same team. The ball is usually played with the hands or arms, but players can legally strike or have short contact with the ball by any part of their body.
